Google Maps Mania: Isometric Maps of the World

May 17th, 2012

Edushi has been creating interactive isometric maps of Chinese cities for a number of years. They have now created maps for all the major Chinese cities.

You can find links to all the Chinese city maps on the Edushi website. The links are all in Chinese. Here are some quick links to view the maps for Honk Kong, Beijing and Shanghai.

Youcity has created similar isometric maps for New York and San Francisco.

The Reykjavik Center Map is a gorgeous hand drawn isometric map of the Icelandic capital. The map includes a number of map markers which give the user information about landmarks in the city.

OpenStreetMap Isometric 3D Maps is a series of isometric maps built on OpenStreetMap map tiles. The maps have been created with open source software (links to the code on github are provided).

These isometric maps are not as visually effective as the other examples but this is an interesting open source project built on open source map tiles. I’m sure that developers will build on this platform and create more attractive isometric building models in the future.

Will Apple's upcoming Map app beat Google Maps?

May 14th, 2012

It seems Google could be losing its crown as the King of mapping and navigation soon. Google Maps has been the best of its category for many years, and it is a life-saver for mobile devices. Rumors are indicating that Apple has something under its, sleeve, though, and it will “blow your head off.”

9to5Mac and All Things Digital’s sources are indicating that Apple’s multiple mapping company acquisitions are finally coming to fruition with the next iteration of iOS. All signs indicate that Apple will be leaving Google Maps behind and introducing a 3D, realistic imaging map service.

This would be a product of one of Apple’s acquired companies, C3 Technologies. Such map application could display your favorite places with life-like textures and 3D models. It would be a mixture of Google Maps’ 3D buildings and satellite images, which does seem rather mind-blowing. And we could be seeing more about this during WWDC, or whenever the next version of iOS is announced.

We haven’t heard anything about any possible responses from Google. But this could be the start of a fierce battle between mapping services, as well as yet another competing factor for the never-ending fight between Android and iOS. Do you think this will be next iOS’ “ground-breaking innovation,” much like Siri claimed to be for iOS 5? And if so, is Google Maps in trouble?

Create and Manage Google Maps with these WordPress Plugins …

May 10th, 2012

Google Maps is a free (for non-commercial use) web mapping service application and technology provided by Google, that powers many map-based services, including the Google Maps website, Google Ride Finder, Google Transit and maps embedded on third-party websites via the Google Maps API.

Google Maps contain many features, offering street maps, a route planner for traveling by foot, car, bike, kayak,or public transport as well as an urban business locator for numerous countries around the world.

google maps Create and Manage Google Maps with these WordPress Plugins

In June of 2001 Google launched Google Maps API which allows developers to integrate Google maps into their websites. Google Maps API makes it possible to embed a Google Maps site into an external website, on to which site specific data (placemarkers, information boxes, etc.) can be overlaid.

Google Maps is one of the most popular and effective ways for a website to provide geographical data to its visitors. According to the site BuiltWith, almost 800,000 sites are currently using Google Maps.  They are used on all kinds of sites including business, education, government, travel, real estate, reference and others.

There are a number of plugins available on WordPress that allow developers to create and manage Google Maps on their sites; here are a few of them:

1. Basic Google Maps Placemarks

Developer: Ian Dunn

Website: wordpress.org

Last Updated: January 13, 2012

Basic Google Maps Placemarks allows users to create and manage the embedded Google maps on their websites, providing several options for  setting the map type (street, satellite, etc), center location, size, zoom level,  and navigation controls, to name a few.

Users can insert markers with unique custom icons, shared common custom icons, or default icons. Placemarks can be assigned to different categories, with different categories displayed on different maps. Basic Google Maps Placemarks is compatible with WordPress MultiSite and comes with many filters  that allow users to customize and extend the plugin, as well as extra shortcode to output a text-based list of markers for mobile devices, search engines, etc.

2. Comprehensive Google Map Plugin

Developer: Alexander Zagniotov

Website: initbinder.com

Last Updated: April 1, 2012

The Comprehensive Google Map Plugin is a fully documented Google map plugin that installs as a widget and a short code. With an intuitive and user friendly Facebook style interactive interface, this plugin makes it easy to configure any Google map and manage multiple map markers.

The Comprehensive Google Map Plugin features over 250 custom marker icons to choose from and allows users to aggregate all their post markers in one map. Users can insert Google-like directions into their maps – driving and walking, distance shown in miles or KM, where to avoid tolls and highways options.

The plugin auto generates a unique ID for each map and offers extensive configuration options for Google map marker, controls, size, KML files, location by latitude/longitude, and location by address, info windows with custom text, traffic/bike lanes and more.

Aiming For The Google Maps Behemoth, UpNext Releases Vector …

May 10th, 2012

UpNext, an angel funded New York start-up, makes beautiful maps. Using a number of clever views, the team has built a wildly unique way to navigate your city and, more important, see buildings, points of interest, and even public transit in real time.

The company, Raj Advani, Vik Advani, Robin Har, and Danny Moon, have been working in mapping for four years and recently released an iPad version of the app.

“UpNext is dynamic, Google Maps is static,” said Moon. “Google Maps is a navigation-centric map. Its cartography geared toward navigating road networks, relegating other map details to the background.”

“We put special emphasis on making our maps fast, highly stylized, and highly interactive. You can tap on buildings to see the businesses inside; better, you can tap on subway stations to see actual trains moving along the map with estimated arrival times (where the data is available). Making every part of the map interactive is important to us,” he said.

The team has a background in video games, which gave them the impetus to rethink the way maps are rendered and displayed. “Maps historically were about more than finding your way around: they were immersive and evocative; emotional, even. Our eventual goal is to bring this sense of wonder back to maps.”

There are three ways to explore the maps. “Immerse” gives you vector based, textured cities with roadways and tappable buildings while “Explore” focuses on venues and POIs. “Navigate” helps you navigate a vehicle through the city without distraction. They also include real-time train information and multi-model routing so you can plan your own routes through a city.

The app currently covers 22 enhanced 3D cities and over 60 cities in total. While it’s no Google Maps beater (yet), it definitely offers a brisk and compelling alternative to Google’s staid yellow and blue.

A Guide to New York City's Oldest Pizzerias – Eater Maps – Eater NY

May 7th, 2012

Dom DeMarco is famous for his handcrafted pies which he started making back in 1964. Nearly 48 years later, he’s still behind the counter, fussing each and every pie with
his own two hands. Of course handcrafted pies mean long wait times, so don’t go hungry, but if you can withstand the line, you’ll be rewarded with a delicious pie made with the finest ingredients including hand crushed tomato sauce, three cheeses, and the finishing touch of hand cut basil and olive oil. You can order toppings too, like pepperoni, Italian sausage, artichokes, and mushrooms, but the three-cheese plain pie is the thing to get.
